Behavioral Health Professions Service Cancelable Loan (BHP-SCL)

We are excited to share an external, serviceable loan forgiveness opportunity that may be available to qualified graduate students in Agnes Scott College’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling master's program to fund your cost of attendance. 

The Georgia Behavioral Health Professions Service Cancelable Loan (BHP-SCL) is a great resource offered by the State of Georgia and administered by the Georgia Student Finance Commission.

The loan is only available to students in applicable programs, such as our Clinical Mental Health Counseling master's program. Qualified recipients must be considered Georgia residents 12-months prior to receiving the loan award and must complete the specified service requirements upon graduation, as defined by the Georgia Student Finance Commission. 

Process

The application process for the BHP-SCL has to be completed annually. Before applying for a BHP-SCL, you must have a GAfutures student account with Social Security Number for secure identification and have a current year FAFSA on file. When to Apply 

The loan application for fall 2024 will open tentatively in summer of 2024. Please monitor GAfutures.org for additional information regarding the application process.

Award Amounts 

A student may receive Behavioral Health Profession Service Cancelable Loan funds based on full-time or half-time enrollment in an eligible graduate/advanced degree program:

  • The maximum annual loan amount is $20,000 for full-time (9 or more semester hours) enrollment.
  • The maximum term loan amount is $10,000 for half-time (5 to 8 semester hours) enrollment.
  • The lifetime maximum aggregate loan amount is $120,000 and students may qualify for no more than 6 years.

General Eligibility Requirements 

  • Meet U.S. citizenship or eligible non-citizen requirements
  • Be a legal resident of Georgia 12 months prior to receiving aid
    • Applicants who apply for this loan program will be required to provide residency documentation to Agnes Scott College for final approval.
  • Must meet Agnes Scott College’s Satisfactory Academic Progress policy. 
  • Student must intend to:
    • Graduate from the eligible advanced degree;
    • Earn the applicable licensure or credential;
    • Be employed or practicing full time in Georgia in an eligible Behavioral Health profession and providing mental or substance abuse assistance, counseling, or treatment to Georgia residents.
